Film Marketing – Turning Yourself Into a Celebrity
Celebrities and films go hand in hand. Most of our celebrities either started out on the screen, or ache to be involved in the glamorous world of TV and Film. While your film might be small potatoes compared to a Hollywood blockbuster, that doesn’t mean you can’t make yourself into a mini-celebrity and leverage all the benefits therein- specifically the ones that help you get your movies made.
First, understand the power that comes with being seen as a star. While we don’t all rub elbows with bona-fide national celebrities, we all know people who just seem to have that star power. They seem beautiful and glamorous, even if they are not classically attractive.
When you’re involved in the media business for long enough you learn one important fact- celebrities are created. The only thing that separates that pretty girl who works at your favorite coffee shop and a drop-dead gorgeous A-Lister is the fact that the A-Lister has a few industries revolving around making her a celebrity, and the coffee shop cutie does not.
Think about it. Hollywood celebrities have top quality personal stylists, hair stylists, plastic surgeons and makeup artists to make them look better than the rest of us. Anyone who has seen a makeover show or who has seen those photos of stars without their beauty-support teams knows that Hollywood beauty is a very expensive construction.
There are also the massive public relations and magazine industries to take into account. They work together to make their chosen stars look as good and interesting and exciting as possible. They stage ‘candid’ photo shoots at exotic locations, they manufacture personal dramas and whole personalities for their clients, they come out with tons of photos and stories every week that do nothing except turn celebrities into people who seem to live bigger, grander lives than the rest of us.
While they are real people underneath, celebrities are nothing more than people with massive support teams dedicated to making them famous and unattainable and some charisma.
Try to create some kind of scandal around your film. It shouldn’t be the kind of scandal that revolves around you treating the people involved poorly- instead it should be the kind of that revolves around some aspect of the film itself.
Maybe your film has a sex scene that can be taken to a level that gets people talking, maybe it can shed light on a controversial topic that people don’t usually talk about, maybe it can take an unpopular stance that is critical of the status quo.
Whatever it is, offhandedly make it a real talking point about the film. To a certain extent, it doesn’t matter if the film is as outrageous as people think it is, and in many ways it is better if it’s not. That way you will get the scandal seekers to see it early on, and then the more mild mannered people will see it once they hear it is more palatable to their tastes.
All of this can be wasted if you yourself are not looking like a mini celebrity. While you can’t hire top stylists, you can probably find plenty of people around you that follow recent trends and styles, and are more than happy to create a look for you that echoes the rich and famous at a reasonable price.
Just because you don’t have the resources of a celebrity doesn’t mean you don’t have the ability to follow their lead. While they pay a fortune to create their aura, you can do the same for little to no money with a little creativity and a little courage.
Celebrity Tattoos – Johnny Depp
Well you all know what today is. It’s Wednesday so that means it’s time for another edition of celebrity tattoos. This week I decided to go with Johnny Depp. I have had a crush on his since the 21 Jump Street Days and the man seems to get better looking the older he gets. Not to mention that Johnny just nailed the top position of being the highest paid actor in Hollywood right now. Johnny is earning $50 million a picture now. Well if you are a fan of Johnny Depp you know that he has quit a bit of tattoos.
Johnny has 14 known tattoos to date. The most famous of those 14 is probably the Wino Forever tattoo he has on his arm, which used to read Winona Forever. He also has a Cherokee Indian Chief in full headdress below the Wino Forever tattoo on his arm. This one is to remember his ancestral cultural heritage.
Johnny also has several tattoos that pertain to his family. He has Lily Rose his daughters name tattooed over his heart. He has his son’s name Jack tattooed his forearm with a Sparrow flying over water above that one. He also has a tattoo of Betty Sue which is his mother in the middle of a heart on his bicep. Above that there is some sort of triangle tattoo. He also has the symbol for The Brave a movie he did tattooed on the inside of his forearm.
Johnny also has some random tattoos on his body. Like the three rectangles on his right index finger and the number three between his thumb and index finger on his left hand. Johnny also has a skull and cross bones tattoo on his lower right leg that reads death is certain and some sort of symbol or something on his right ankle.
Johnny explains the reasoning behind all of his tattoos and why he has so many:
“My body is a journal in a way. It’s like what sailors used to do, where every tattoo meant something, a specific time in your life when you make a mark on yourself, whether you do it yourself with a knife or with a professional tattoo artist.”
Bollywood Actresses Who Went Nude
Bollywood, the biggest film industry in the world, with respect to the number of films released, has been fairly conservative with regards to love-making scenes or nudity. Due to the cultural upbringing and conditioning of India, sex was more or less a taboo and nudity has been something that has been kept off limits. The mindset has slowly and steadily been eroding since the 2000 and the industry has been become more liberal due to the young generation. However complete nudity is still not accepted and can take controversial proportions.
Bollywood actress and models have gone without clothes for magazines, for a movie scene or just for a lark. Sometimes, the clothes have dropped from their body in a classic case of wardrobe malfunction. For instance, Dimple Kapadia’s towel slipping act in Saagar, was perhaps the beginning of wardrobe malfunction, long before Janet Jackson’s nipple gate happened. So here are some of the controversial and rare instances where Bollywood actresses went nude for the camera:
1. Zeenat Aman was shown topless, draped in a see though flimsy saree which exposed her voluptuous charms in the movie Zeenat Aman. Raj Kapoor, the legendary director who was rumored to have a fetish of big breasts, said, “You will come to watch Zeenat’s tits but will forget about them and remember only the movie by the time you leave the theater” This was way back in the 70s when such kind of exposure was looked upon with shock.
2. Mandakini bared her breasts the 1986 film ‘Ram Teri Ganga Maili’ through a white transparent saree, as she bathed under the water fall. This movie was also a huge hit and people download and watch Mandakini’s legendary waterfall scene that created history.
3. Mamta Kulkarni went topless for Stardust in the 90s and this cover page exposure took on the shape of a big controversy. Negative publicity is always good in media and the magazine sold many copies
4. Kashmira Shah: Kashmira Shah was shown nude from behind, and a part of her breasts were shown on camera, much to her chagrin in the movie Revathi.
5. Madhu Sapre: Madhu Sapre, the model faced a lot of controversy and ire when she posed nude along with her then boyfriend Milind Soman for Tuff Shoes.
